The project involved replacing a 350-ft section of existing 24-in corrugated metal pipe culvert by a 36-in pipe culvert near the intersection of Tarabrook Drive and Evergreen Drive in the City of Orinda. The existing 24-in pipe was collapsed and created a sink hole which the City has provided temporary repairs. The 36-in pipe was installed using a jacking and boring method from a 35'-3"x-16'-6"x36' deep bore pit. The 36-in pipe was installed from this bore pit in both forward and backward directions. The bore pit was constructed using steel soldier piles with steel plates lagging, and was horizontally braced at 10-ft interval.
JMEC was the structural engineer to perform independent check of the design of this bore pit to ensure that the excavation shoring system was adequate for various stages of construction and was conformed to the CAL-OSHA requirements.
The 36-in pipe was successfully installed in about 3 months.
